Unwritten society rules
Having lived SF, Chicago and Houston, I agree that this happens everywhere.

In the winter in Chicago, people dig out parking spots in front of their houses and save the spot with an old chair.

Wo unto the fool who parks in another man's spot.

It is against the law to save spots, but there are unwritten rules you don't break.

I side with the neighbors here. I am sure they all have stories about being blocked in their driveway because some punk tried to squeeze his compensation truck in a spot that didn't exist.
