I was recruited to play at BYU a long time ago (different sport). When I showed up I was shocked at the hate other fans spewed on BYU. Then years later, and long after I had graduated I realized that we did this to ourselves (intentionally).
Think about it. We attend a church school, and then make the mission of that program to go and play on behalf of that school, proudly displaying what it represents, and loudly proclaim the "standards" or the "principles" so others can learn and see what it is all about.
Of course BYU players and fans are a target. This is the trade off and BYU players/fans/program "supposedly" is willing to experience a heavy amount of negative feedback along the way.
they are not saying it to you personally so no big deal. Who cares?
