See, I disagree. Prior to 2003, I dont remember this kind of behavior.
I don't remember calls to bench McCoy or Mitchell, etc. It was always "do our best...and beat BYU." And even then we when lost to the Y, the team was still treated well.
I think it's like gwalker says, expectations are ruining the stadium experience.
