Independence was a reactionary move to utah's invite to pac12 and not wanting to
look like we were left behind. It was a move against the mwc because of its tv exposure and unwillingness to allow byutv to broadcast games when it had not been selected to be on any of its tv partners channels. It was a move by espn to pick up programing secondary to the loss of golden boy boise state to the mwc. And yes it was for money. If any group of people are not more frugal with money than myself and most mormons I haven't seen them. Lastly it was a step to free us up to possibly get invited to a p5 conference. It hasn't happened and It may never happen especially if the Big12 does not need to expand.

The question is what do you do if BYU is not invited to the Big12. To me I understand why we went independent, I just don't want to stay independent. I get the feeling that soo many byu fans so detest the intermountain west schools that they would rather play unlv and nevada than the rocky mountain schools. I saw cber cheer when they announced unlv of all schools. Give me a break. I love playing P5 schools, but we are getting played by them on a 2-1 margin. Don't get me started on the WCC. Other than Gonzaga they are a bunch of division 2 schools trying to play division 1 basketball. But I guess it is okay that we trow our basketball and olympic sports under the bus.

Independent fans have their reasons for loving independence and those who want to be in a conference have ours. My problem is that I see independence as just a cover up/makeup to make it look like we are p5 level when in reality we are in a worse position than a g5 team. Independence was to be a temporary stepping stone. If we are not invited to the big12 and stay indy it will and even does now feel like the Island of misfit toys. And maybe that is the main reason I dislike independence. We have jumped ship and are on an island and I do not see any ships insite to rescue us. Yes as another poster said it feels like the program is slowly dying. I hope I am wrong. Because I have loved following BYU for more years than most of the poster on this board have lived.
