We're talking about a 20 year old flat bed consumer grade scanner here.
There's not a chance that's any better than the scanners today.

I agree with you about buying good stuff. A lot of my clients still have 15+ year old printers that are still going strong albeit VERY slow compared to the new stuff. I don't see the new stuff lasting that long however.
