remember the 85MPH limited speedometers in all cars thanks to Jimmy Carter?
How many of you remember when, in the late 70s, all cars made or imported to the US had to have speedometers that did not exceed 85MPH? The idea was that you would drive slower (and thus save gas) if you saw that your car could only go 85. Of course, everyone knew that the speedometer had nothing to do with what was under the hood but it was a sort of mental game being played by carter's Department of Transportation. Of course, illegal conversion kits were made so that you could modify your gauges to a more realistic measure. I'll never forget going to the Porsche dealer in Boulder with my dad and looking at Porsche 911s and 928s with 85 MPH gauges...then getting back in our VW Dasher with its 120 MPH speedometer.
