Andy misses the mark with this
...P5 and G5 teams don’t have that much more access to the big-money bowls than BYU does, so BYU doesn’t need to sell the farm to get in. Each year, most P5 conference champs will be in the playoff, leaving those conferences’ dedicated New Year’s 6 game slots to be chosen at-large. Thus, most of the time BYU will have just as good of a shot at one of those coveted spots as any P5 team.

Much of these statements are not true. Almost every conference bowl tie in to a NY6 game has a clause to take the 2nd or 3rd place team from that contracted conference if the champ or runner-up are otherwise occupied in the semi-final games.

This is why #12 GA Tech went to the Orange bowl instead of #11 Kansas St. (KSU didn't have a NY6 game at all) The ACC has a contract to the Orange bowl and if their champ is in a playoff game then the #2 team regardless of how high/low they are ranked will represent the ACC in the Orange bowl. A caveat - I don't know for sure how they determine the #2 team on whether it is pure conference standings or highest ranked...either way GA Tech only had to be ranked higher than #17 Clemson or #21 Louisville to get in to the Orange bowl.

Other "at-large" teams this year would not have likely gotten in ranked that low.

Here are some finer points of the NY6/CFP that this writer doesn't seem to correctly consider...

Add in that a #20 ranked BSU got in because they were the highest rated Go5 champ and that seems like more access opportunity than BYU. BYU could have been as high as #11 (where KSU was) and not gotten in this year based on how other things fell in place.

Only the CFP games should be equated as "equal access" to all. Any team ranked in the final committee poll in the top 4 is in [Period]. After that based on the bowls in the rotation that year there really are only 1-5 at-large spots. So in some years unless BYU is top 5 they will not get in over teams ranked much lower.

I've posted many times about their being the chance for BYU to get in to a NY6/CFP and even more opportunity than in the BCS system. But by no means can we truly say that BYU "most of the time BYU will have just as good of a shot at one of those coveted spots as any P5 team."

Particularly since the author is also wrong that "most P5 conference champs will be in the playoff, leaving those conferences’ dedicated New Year’s 6 game slots to be chosen at-large."

While yes most P5 conference champs will be in the CFP their slots then go to next in line from their own conference and NOT left to be at-large spots...
