1. The start of Futurama. Matt Groening and many of the good writers migrated to that show, and as a result the first few seasons of Futurama were way better than seasons 10+ of Simpsons.

2. Phil Hartman's death. Yeah, he only had two big characters but their loss hurt the show in a major way.
