It's more about overlapping fanbases. More invested fans=higher ticket prices.
Consider the divide between how our in-state & out-state fans see the Utah games. The in-state fans take those games far more seriously. Which makes sense, since they have to deal with Utah fans on a daily basis. Those fans live near the stadium & buy tickets.

I'd honestly just as soon watch BYU play Washington or Arizona. But local fans pay a premium on the "regional" games.
