I vividly remember his recruiting at the time. I'm sure there is something to SL's post, but Koy was not LDS and felt no connection to BYU other than his brother went there. Also, he wanted to forge his own course as he would always have been the brother of the legend if he'd come to BYU. It's very akin to why Peyton Manning echewed Ole Miss for Tennessee. Yes, it was the better program at the time, but even if it weren't he was astute enough to see the problem with being related to a legend.
