She is 9 yrs old and it was really good for her to connect to her extended family back in the US via the chat apps (also really helped with her spellling and overall English). You need to monitor them, but if they have similar phones in the US, you can get a semi-smartphone for cheap that has some apps installed, but doesn't allow the user to go to an app store and install a bunch of others.
