Rugby style punting question
I thought the point of the rugby style kick was to give the punter a little more time, let him roll out, and kick something that can hopefully roll a ways. And there is always the possibility of the punter taking off if the situation warrants it.

Linehan's punts have all been extremely quick to my admittedly untrained eye. He seems to be kicking the ball just as quick as a traditional punter which negates the reason to do a rugby style punt right? And why are we style setting up our blocking schemes as if he were a traditional punter? The swinging gate is great for a traditional punter, but seems ineffective for a rugby style one. once he takes a step or two at the most he's outside their protection. So he has to kick the ball extremely quickly to compensate.

Isn't there a different way to protect a rugby punter that we can figure out and help him be more successful? If he could take even 3-4 steps instead of the 1-2 it seems he is currently taking I would think it would be huge. Give him a little more momentum into the kick and give our guys time to get downfield and make a stop.

Can someone smarter than me enlighten me on the above quandaries?

Bad news, as far as D-1 punters go Linehan doesn't have that strong of a leg (kimdaddy35, Sep 23, 2015 at 12:44pm)
