He has 5 years at 90-165. Last year was no aberration but the low point of the steady decline, mostly due to poor defensive philosophy and significantly also due to injuries to bigs Austin and Aytes.
Even the 5 year average you site as "good" was 32nd in the nation. Average overall for 10 years is 79th in the country in defense (compared to 46th in offense).
I'm on board with those who say Rose's defenses have not been as awful as some say, and in fact i posted the data to enable that argument. But Rose's defense has not been relatively good overall. Now, it is apparent with his hiring of Quincy Lewis, that Rose knows defense has been the big weakness that has limited the program and he intends to turn it around. Rose has been a little slow to pick up on the advanced stats but Quincy has been quick on that uptake. Defenses can't be good without using that stuff anymore; 5 years ago maybe, but not today.
Good health permitting, like last year, BYU has a shot at a storied season. The post Jimmer dysfunctional PG is gone so the offense should be top 20 PPP. Every reason to believe with the return of Austin, the addition of Davis, Kaufusi in support, with Quincy's implementation of UVA's pack line defense, that defense can be top 30; perhaps better if we can ever get Aytes healthy again. While Kaufusi was helpless on defense last year due to lack of experience, he is much improved.
That is not quite Gonzaga level, but it's close.
p.s. one pleasant thought: we won't have to watch our center dart out to mid court to play zone defense anymore.
