The only thing you see is Shere Kahn fighting mowgli's dad (killed offscreen). That's as much of the separation of Mogli and his parents as you see. You never even see the mother.

I'm not saying the movie is way kid friendly like the original. It's more of a cross between Cinderella and Maleficent. Aside from 4-5 moments (all but one involving Shere Khan) it is very kid friendly, lots of humor and levity.
