Elon Musk... innovator, creative genius, visionary... or myth maker?
Musk has taken on Steve Jobs' mantel as the worlds' tech visionary. But how innovative is he really? How is SpaceX doing? Tesla is impressive, but is the technology that much better than competitors like Fisker? Is the private sector beyond where the space industry was in 1965? I'm thinking, like Jobs, Musk is more of a marketing genius. The most recent thing I saw Musk's name attached to was magnetic levitation train tests out in the desert. Mag lev trains have been around at least since the early 1960s. My uncle was an executive with a major aerospace company that was about 70% funded by government research. They were testing mag lev trains (scaled down I think by half) in the Arizona desert in the 1960s and achieved speeds of well over 300 mph. The practicality of deploying the technology was cast into doubt when someone asked what happens if a kid throws a big rock in front of it.
