I think either way is fine. But as a YM leader, I hate it when parents make their dilemmas my problem. I should not be asked to work harder to get a kid their eagle because they ultimately chose sports (or other activities) over scouts, but the mom gets ticked when the kid doesn't have their eagle (because they don't go to scouts), or because 10 other kids don't accommodate the family by having scout camp the one week that jonny football can go to summer camp, oh and by the way, a leader is going to have to bring him home a day early so that he can get back to practice on Saturday morning.
But I come from the experience of quitting sports my junior year to focus on AP classes, and then tried to get back onto the team as a senior when classes don't matter as much, so I prioritize sports a bit lower than others.
