Asked how closely BYU was considered by the Big 12, Tuckett says, "Not as close as the Pac-10."
"We were never really close there," continues Tuckett, "except every time an NCAA meeting or a CFA (College Football Association) meeting or an A.D.'s meeting came up, everyone would say, 'We'd like to have you guys; we have a lot of Mormons in the area.' But it was just A.D. talk, as friends, and never got past the talking point."

The Baylor over BYU thing makes zero sense. In the early '90s BYU's resume blew every other SWC team's resume out of the water except Texas and Texas A&M. Houston came on strong in the late '80s and early 90s, but their fan support and facilities were awful. If BYU was a serious candidate then they would have been placed ahead of Texas Tech not to mention Baylor. Therefore somebody had to put both Texas Tech and Baylor ahead of BYU. Ann Richards wasn't going to do that. She really didn't give a hoot about the situation especially Texas Tech. Bob Bullock, the Lieutenant Governor who graduated from both Baylor and Texas Tech, did care. His meddling (which is more widely reported) is much more believable than Ann Richards squeezing out BYU.
