Saw the new Star Trek movie over the weekend . . . Warning, I'm not a "trekkie," so perhaps I just lack appreciation for the nuances and culture. But, walking out of the theater, here were my thoughts:
1. Easily the worst of the three modern remakes, by far.
2. Chris Pine is a great actor.
3. At least the prior remakes got some of the physics correct. When a hole was blasted in the side of the Enterprise, people and objects were sucked into the vacuum of space. In this episode, the hull of the Enterprise was punctured hundreds of times, but crew members ran past the holes multiple times as if they weren't there.
4. The "Sulu is a gay family man" storyline was forced, contrived and unnecessary.
5. Who knew that Beasty Boys music could be used as a weapon of mass destruction? . . . so stupid.
On the whole, this felt like a step backward for the franchise, and JJ's absence in the director's chair was obvious.
