certainly not scientific evidence but it's interesting to note that in 2007...
...when BYU went to play UCLA in the Rose Bowl attendance was 72,000 and the year prior when Utah went to play UCLA in the Rose Bowl the attendance was only 59,000. There are a number of variables that could affect attendance from one year to the next so this is just in the "interesting" category and not conclusive of anything. I watched the game on Versus and remember being able to hear the crowd chanting BYU stuff and the play by play guy commenting that the crowd sounded like a BYU home game.
