The Cal coach has developed a system where players are plugged in and they run his system or the next guy will. Smyth lets the boys play, if they can do something special, then by all means do it. Rugby is much more fun to play and watch when it's a bit more freewheeling. Top level players are attracted to that, not to mention all the crap that comes along with living in and attending Berkeley.
I've heard that a couple of Cal's recruits have made visits to BYU for this very reason.
