Billy Idol - He sounded surprisingly good and my wife says he's better looking now that when his musical career was in its prime. The crowd was late arriving. Almost a Dodgers crowd at a concert. And people were still getting into things, so the response to Billy wasn't what it might have been later in the night. He did get the crowd going a little with "Dancin with Myself" and a couple of others. I was pleasantly surprised that Flesh for Fantasy fell a little flat. I don't know if it's that music doesn't have as much power in that direction or if Billy probably being in his 60s didn't help.
Sam Hunt - I like country when I hear it. As long as it isn't too twangy. But I almost never choose to listen to it. Sam Hunt's music, like more and more country music lately, almost has a rock edge to it with the way guitars are used. Even though I didn't know his music until I looked it up on spotify before the concert, I liked it.
Sia - I didn't even know Sia's name before looking her up for the concert. I was surprised at how many of her songs I know though. Apparently, she doesn't let people see her face when she's performing or doing interviews. She wants to maintain her anonymity and be able to go places without being recognized. To make up for that she has dancers that do weird and entertaining things. Like Cirque de Soleil weird minus the death defying acrobatics. She put on an interesting and enjoyable show.
One Republic - I have liked these guys for a while, but they surprised me with the quality of their performance. I like seeing musicians who are very good musicians generally and not just able to play their stuff. The lead singer played a piano solo that sounded like it came out of a performance major's recital. He also wailed on the piano and even accidentally broke off a key (he said that's the first time it's every happened). He gave the key to someone in the crowd. Right before "Too late to Apologize," He said, "Here's one you've all heard. If not, Welcome back from North Korea."
Twenty One Pilots - I'm a big fan of these guys. Their sound was good. The performance was a little lacking overall. I think the size of an 18,000 seat arena had them feeling a little out of their element.
Drake - Good entertainer. Seemed like a good dude. I'm just so not into rap that I couldn't get into it.
U2 - I was amazed that about 10% of the crowd left right after Drake. You have a seat entitling you to hear U2 live, all you have to do is nothing (stay put), and you leave??? My wife and I didn't get it at all. Kids these days. Anyway, U2 was the opposite of Twenty One Pilots in terms of performing experience and comfort in a large venue. They owned it. I was a little surprised to hear Bono riff about how he and the guys from the band love America and the idea of America. He said there are a lot of people around the world who still look to America for hope and for an example. We tried to get them back out for an encore, but it didn't work.
Overall, it was a great show.
We didn't get tickets for night two even though we would have loved to see Sting. Ariana Grande, Brittney Spears and Usher didn't have enough pull on us.
