Not all "whole new" is created equally. Of St. Mary's whole new team last
year, how many practiced with the team the year before (either because they were red shirting or just not getting minutes)?

Of those who weren't with the team, how many weren't playing basketball anywhere regularly the year before?

I don't know the answer to either of those questions for St Mary's. I'll bet the answer to the second question is "0." And I'll bet the answer to the first question is four or less weren't practicing at St. Mary's the year before.

We have 8 guys who weren't on the team at all last year. Of the seven who were on the team, Kyle Davis is done for the year (and his career), Kaufusi just came back from football and weighs 40 pounds more than he did last year, and Aytes was so hurt last year he may as well count as not having been on the team in terms of practice experience. Bryant has been too hurt to play enough to get anything going this year.

That leaves Nick Emery, Davin Guinn, Braiden Shaw and Bryant (who had barely played this year due to injury) as the returners at the game and available yesterday who played and practiced with the team in any signicant way last year (again not counting Kaufusi yet because he's still shifting back to basketball). Let that sink in.

Mika, TJ Haws, Dastrup and Frampton weren't playing basketball anywhere last year. Bryant has been hurt and has yet to get into any kind of a rythym. Rose has also battled knee issues but played through it. That's six of our guys who weren't on the team last year.

Aytes was ill and didn't even make the trip for the St Mary's game. Most people probably didn't consider that Davis and Aytes not being available probably led to us playing more zone to protect our bigs. Add Aytes back in and get Kaufusi integrated and see how it changes.

It should be fairly obvious to the most casual observer that BYU 2016-17 is very unique, even for BYU. And isn't close to St. Mary's situation from last year.

The weeping, wailing and nashing of teeth that has gone on past a reasonable cooling off period after Thursday's game is completely unwarranted.
