Of the 7 TEs on the 2016 Roster, it appears that only 3 were on scholarship, and two of those were moved from the defensive side of the ball during camp.
Balderee is not a big playmaker, but he is a solid blocker with reliable hands and is deserving of a scholarship. Marshall walked on to help fill the void, and played decently minus the drop against Utah.
Pilimai and Hinds were moved from defense in the fall, wasn't realistic to expect much of them this year, but the coaches seem to like Pilimais potential. Griffits, Weekes, and Sampson are all walk-ons as well.
Others have pointed out that there is a lot of TE talent on the way. The coaches have clearly targeted it as a position that needs help. Your criticism is both outdated and uninformed.
