This is exactly the problem with all this stuff - I get it that BYU has a

mission, and it feels like it has to strictly uphold certain standards to be able to accomplish that mission, but it also can't accomplish that mission (at all) if it exists only on the fringes. Gotta be willing to make some concessions here and there.
