A few months I ago I posted somewhere about BYU being pulled from nike.com, but I think I deleted it. ANYWAYS, heres some fun information I recently learned that I thought you nerds would enjoy.
BYU is currently in negotiations to become a tier 1 merchandiser with BYU. That's why BYU built the nike shop within the bookstore, even though Nike still helped build it and put up the infrastructure. Its interesting because BYU athletics is a elite status - being the top you can be. The basketball team just got hooked up with tons of more gear since this change happened midseason.
BYU is also one of the only schools to carry a line of Nike Golf clothing. BYU has a huge demand for high priced and nice clothing, so Nike worked out a deal for all of that $110 polos to be sold in the bookstore. That demand is leading towards the expansion into a tier 1 school.
Becoming a tier 1 school would mean that most retailers would have a 6-12 week period to sell all the remaining non Nike BYU gear. That means you would no longer be able to buy the gross, outdated BYU gear in the back aisle of Smiths or any Under Armor gear with a BYU logo on. Nike exclusive. But the bookstore would lose a HUGE section of their first floor, so they would also need to expand the nike store further.
BYU is also one of only a handful of teams to be Elite status for athletics but not a tier 1 merchandizer.
