It can be a very self centered erroneous view. God didn't kill someone's friend
in a car crash so that everyone around them could learn something from it.
To suggest things are "happening for a reason" suggests we don't have free agency. Things happen because we have free agency and make choices, and those choices are creating a domino effect all over the world all the time.
