Yes you are missing something. There is a revolution going on with regard to
how people are influenced, especially young people. (See our last Presidential Election) The average twitter account has less than 100 followers, and having more than 3,000 followers would put you in the top 1 percent. So 30k is significant. It didn't just happen. He and his partner worked hard to develop content that 30k people decided was worth reading. So, 30k people read and are influenced, one way or another, by his posts. I guarantee the BYU admissions office understands this.

The Church is very interested in social media and how it influences people. The Church has an account with 390K followers. Tom Holmoe has 24k followers While my son was on his mission he and his twitter partner were invited to meet with the Church media department to discuss social media. Obviously he didn't go, but I think it shows the church is interested in social media. BYU is a reflection of the church's views in general. I should mention the twitter account is Just Mormorns, or maybe Only Mormons. I forget. My kids set up a twitter account for me, but I don't post and I am not sure I even follow my son's account.

Do I get the allure of twitter? No. Does it seem significant to you? It seems not, but I am pretty sure it is an accomplishment that was was integral in his acceptance. Sorry I mentioned it twice. I should have said, "Let me sum up," (gratuitous Princess Bride reference) before the last paragraph.
