When you do cancel, do it by phone. If it is within 60 days of when it was charged, they may offer to refund the fee if you keep the card. Accept, if they do that. Then cancel after the fee is refunded.

I know when I cancel my AMEX cards they prorate my annual fee and refund me the portion owed.
