In the specific instance of putting them on homes, it would actually be helpful to trap the energy and convert it to a
usable source. I've always been a skeptic of climate change, but recently took a course through BYU's independent study that discussed the science behind climate change and gave supporting evidence that things have shifted out of the normal cycles during the last fifty years, enough evidence for me to seriously question my previous skepticism of climate change.
Perhaps re-using the vast amount of solar energy as a means to power our homes and vehicles instead of allowing to be simply trapped by our atmosphere could help to balance the other changes we are seeing.
I really like some of the ideas of solar powered roadways that could also provide power to electric vehicles. While this video is old, the idea is a good one, and would eliminate the need to convert large additional space into solar farms.
The technology is currently much more expensive than traditional roadways, but mass production and implementation would drive costs down.
