Big difference on moneyball between baseball and football. Moneyball is based on analytics, i.e. Statistics. They work more for baseball because of such a large sample size and long season with so many games. Over the long haul, the statistics should bear out. However, as can be seen in the movie, the premise fell apart in the playoffs because of the much shorter nature. Fewer games mean less time for the statistics to average out. Fewer games allow for unique variations from the predicted results. Thus, easy to lose a 7 game series.
Same principal holds true for football. Too few games to rely on statistics averaging out. Too many variables in a smaller sample. That was Bronco's biggest problem. He loved statistics to govern his policies, procedures and decisions. He state many times that if you do this and this, you will win 80% of the time. That is true when considered against years and years of games. However, over one team's single season, simply to short with too many variable to count on the stats to average. The other issue with his premise is that even if the stats held out, you lose 20% of the time. You know what you get with 20% losses, no ranking and no big bowls.
