A small steel bowl or pot that you don't care if it gets ruined works, too.
I used a router to bore out the underside of the car, making it a little rough to ensure the solder would stay put, then cut solder pieces and placed them on the scale along with the car, wheels, and wheel axles until it read 5 oz. Then melted the solder outside on the grill side burner and poured it in.
