Opinions, examples and anecdotes is the only answer. For some it does pay off.
Others it doesn't lead to college scholarship

Some people the journey is the goal, not necessarily a scholarship

I personally like the friends my kids have made that are on their club teams more than the kids from the ward or neighborhood. They seem to have higher goals and a higher standard of doing things compared to the booger eating Xbox kids in their scout troops.

But it's different for everyone.
