else, specifically Boston. This myth keeps being perpetuated and people throw out a $50 million number. Well, let's look it in depth:
After four years, the amount of salary from the Jazz would be $137,121,000. The amount from a new team (Boston) would be $131,580,000. That's only a difference of $5,541,000. That's only 4.0% less than the Jazz could pay for those four years. That is a very minor amount when we're talking about $130 million.
Where people get the notion of "50 million" is that 5th year the Jazz can sign him for, that the Celtics could not. His salary the 5th year would be $40,392,000 for a total difference of $45,933,000 when comparing the two options with the 5th year is included.
That isn't accurate though because someone else will pay him that 5th year. He'll be 32 years old and if healthy, will likely still get paid a large amount. Yes, he is risking that an injury could derail his career and hurt him that 5th year.
We don't know what contracts are going to be like in five years though. Hayward is currently on a max deal right now that pays $16 million this year. The max contract has increased significantly since then. It's possible that Hayward is still on top of his game at 32 and max contracts have gone even higher and he would potentially sign for a larger amount than the $40 million. Players who have been in the league 10+ years are also eligible to sign a larger max than players who haven't been in the league for that long. Chris Paul is an example of someone who's about to sign for a max deal at age 32.
TLDR:
The real difference between what the Jazz can offer vs Boston is an additional $5,541,000 spread out over 4 years and a guaranteed $40 million that 5th year vs. whatever his market value would be as a free agent that fifth year.
In my opinion that isn't enough to choose one place over the either. It still comes down to where you would rather be.
