I grew up in Alaska and backpacked and climbed all over the west and New England. The worst, most aggressive bears I've ever run into were in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park on the Appalachian Trail. One followed or tracked me and I made into a shelter that had chainlink fence where I sat for an hour or two before it left. I would definitely bring bear spray.
