He should have pinch hit in the bottom of the 8th. Dodgers were clinging to a
1-run lead and had a man on second. They have arguably baseball's best closer in the game sitting in the bullpen.
Roberts got caught up in trying to get Kershaw the shutout. As you said--it's May, and he wanted to give Kershaw the opportunity. A dispassionate decision would have been to pinch hit for him and let Jansen attempt to close it out.
