I prefer to compare how each compared within his own era
For example, a guy who averaged 25 ppg when the next closest averaged 15 ppg is more impressive than someone who averaged 40 when the next guy averaged 39.
A stats guru would probably focus on how many standard deviations from the mean LBJ is now compared to MJ in his era. I'm not smart enough to figure that out but conceptually that's how I think of it.
