I mean. I hate Utah athletics. The way Indiana Jones hated Nazis.

But I'm a little tired of the posts every year on how "THIS IS GONNA BE THE YEAR..." and then the totally irrational, "logical" reasons why BYU wins by double-digits this year. I'm not even sure a win matters that much for the future of the program. Utah has every conceivable recruiting advantage over BYU right now. Every one. They should beat BYU. Just like Wisconsin should beat BYU.

And here is my point. San Jose State "broke through" a few years ago and beat BYU. So did Nevada. Did those programs beating BYU make them better program than BYU in anybody's mind? No. BYU will have their breakout game and beat the Utes eventually, and it will be a nice win- and celebrated. Did beating Gonzaga in the Kennel the last three seasons materially change the Basketball program? Did anybody who was not going to come to BYU suddenly choose BYU based on that game? Not that I'm aware of.

So the Utah game is a single game. BYU doesn't need to break through and beat Utah to create some power shift. Because if that's the way we view it, then Utah State breaking through and beating BYU once in Provo created some power shift in the state. It didn't.

BYU needs to beat Utah at least 50% of the time for the next several years for it to actually matter. I get that it needs to start with one. But even then, the two programs are in completely different places. The way for BYU to again rise above Utah is to consistently recruit better players than they do- particularly in the trenches. It is here that BYU is getting bullied.

I bleed blue. But this is the way I see it. Its a very important game- but all the sentiment about breaking through seems false to me. One game won't do that. Two games may start to do that. Three games will start to do that. Four games will do that. Some very major things need to happen on both campuses for that to happen.

Sorry. Maybe I'm just having a bad day. But this subject gets more irritable with every passing year.
