My Bassett hound puppy was in that situation recently.
He'd been dry heaving for a day straight so we took him to the animal clinic in bountiful and the dr there did an x ray and told us he had something soft stuck in his stomach and he would need a 2500 dollar surgery, no other options presented to us.

Instead we took him to the cottonwood animal hospital for a second opinion and they had the genius idea to try and get him to throw up, which he did, and it got rid of the obstruction.

It was nice seeing a vet whose first instinct wasn't to just have an expensive procedure done.
