The reason I ask, a sensitive tooth that becomes non-sensitive
Is consistent with necrosis also. Sometimes teeth die a painless death, but then become infected, and only manifest problems when it's a problem. At times, those problems are pretty significant (lots of swelling, pain, airway obstruction, etc.).

Not suggesting this is the case, just saying that a necrotic tooth won't be sensitive to cold, air, etc.
