They did go to Egypt. I can't remember if they visited Sinai, but my friends definitely saw the pyramids! I know they visited Petra in Jordan too. My most recent friend was there last fall semester so very recent.

As for safety, my friends said they felt very safe. There is obviously a pretty visible security apparatus, but they all said they had no security problems.
