conviction is poorly represented. It is almost like Hollywood simply does not understand religious conviction and so has a difficult time writing it into movies. For example, we don't see Doss reading the Bible (in fact the Bible seems to mostly serve as a protective covering around his girl's picture), we don't hear any words of the Bible explaining his beliefs, we don't see the religious community he grew up in or see him discussing and exploring his faith with others back home to lead to this decision to enlist but not fight.
I feel like there was a much better version of this movie lurking back there somewhere that didn't get made.
