I don't think it matters too much as long as you have warm enough clothes. If
you have the funds, go ahead and buy nice hiking socks, pants, etc. They are nice, but certainly not necessary. I've done plenty of really long hikes in jeans, a t shirt and Hanes socks. But more expensive non cotton gear will dry faster and is usually more comfortable.

For me, I spend money on shoes first and then worry about the rest.
