Being "too wrangler like" is a good thing. They are selling 100K+ units per year (granted most are 4-door, which is why Ford is a bit sluggish entering the market with a 2-door.)
Most likely they are looking at FJ Cruiser Sales figures (which weren't good), which is probably the best vehicle to consider because Ford is most likely going to stick with IFS (bad idea if you want to compete with wrangler).
Oh well. If it looks like any of the concepts on the link you posted, I may become very interested.
