The entire show relies on unreliable narrators. Their are only 2 supernatural
occurrences that we can take at face value. The first is the disappearance of 2% of the population and the other is Kevin coming back to life twice after he seemingly died. Every other fantastical tale we are told could be a total lie. The show even has the dog guy return in the third season and Kevin laughs as he mocks the guy's crazy theories.

I think the point of all of this is that we shouldn't concern ourselves with the minutiae. Rather we should focus on the relationships and the small things that bring happiness. I know the show is based on a novel, but I can't help but think that it was an exercise in catharsis for Damon Lindelof. Lost did such a good job at sucking people into the mythology that I think it set itself up to disappoint because there is no way a show like that can answer all questions in a way that fans want them to be answered. Rather than falling for that trap again, Lindelof ensured that any deep dive into the mythology of The Leftovers was a non-starter.
