Most Utah fans I know are great people (with bad taste, of course ). I work with them and go to Church with them. For the most part, they are just like me. I have several in my family.
The rats are the few, but they are bad. They are mostly folks who grew up in Utah and hate the Church culture, or friends/family of the same. So they go out of their way to stand out as terrible. There is a big intersect between them and the people that comment on the Salt Lake Tribune. Lots of overcompensation.
Again, I believe they are the exception. But they make the Ute fanbase, on average, the most anti-Mormon fanbase out there. Which is crazy, because a majority of their fans, their coaches, and many players are great Mormons--active in the Church, ready to give blessings or serve when called upon.
It amazes me how you can go onto the Trib, see a bunch of accounts with the drum and feather or "Ute" in their name, whose sole purpose for logging in is to bash any Mormon in any news story (or to somehow blame the Church for any and every problem in Utah and sometimes America)--yet they love them some Kyle Whittingham, Chase Hansen, and Brit Covey. Their Twitter mob is of the same ilk. Some are just horrible people--or regular people with a horrible obsession--and they just infect the entire complexion of the fanbase. They are like the wart on that lady's face in Uncle Buck--it is hard to see past them.
