The problem for the new generation of BYU fans is they didn't experience the 80's or even the 90's. They grew up on
John Beck and Max Hall. They watched Riley play with a broken back and Jake Heaps leap over a rolling ball in the end zone. This new generation doesn't know what it's like to beat Utah consistently, or be part of the national conversation year after year. The new kids keep hearing these stories of Steve Young and Jimmy Mac but, to them, they are only just stories. Ty Freaking Detmer is their parents' hero, the guy that some of these kids are named after, but to this new group of fans, Ty Detmer is the guy who can't run an offense at BYU. It's a different era and BYU is quickly being left behind. The new generation needs something to hold onto, because beating Oklahoma, Beck to Harline, 4th and 18, and George (still open) is all they have.
