If you put a guy with secure hands in the slot you can hit him on a lot of quick
routes. That forces the linebackers to spread out a little bit. Once they spread out to cover quick routes, you can open up the run game a bit. Through all of this, you can set up a few deep passes later in the game.
The whole idea is to get the ball out of the QBs hands less than 3 seconds after the snap. The defense has little time to react without getting out of position.
