Why does a Rocky Mountain school have a sailor's hat?

I've always hated that sailor hat cougar logo. It makes no sense and looks silly. What do sailors have to do with mountain lions?

I also don't like the color. It's too light for BYU.

Neither. It's a freshman cap. Old tradition around the country to have freshmen wear a cap like this.
