There never have been. And it's hard to know who they are till they prove themselves in battle with their own troops. That's just the way it is with coaches and CEOs as well.
Guys who study the minutiae of their craft and have the ability to teach and insist on excellence in all aspects of the performance of the soldiers/players. Gary Crowton looked like he might have been a good coach, but he was a really bad HC. Kalani has a lot going for him. We all love him and his ability to bring people in is a real strength. But that doesn't make you a top-notch general. And none of us have the data to see exactly where he is lacking. But it is obvious from the results that something is really lacking. The hard part for him is that he probably doesn't even know what it is. A guy like Leach or Reid could sit there with him on the job for a week and probably know exactly what the problems are. And even if they told him, it doesn't mean he could fix the problems. Maybe he could, but most of these blind spots are due to personality traits that are't going to change when you are in your mid-40s no matter how good your intentions are.
That's just the way it is. BYU is in a really bad spot right now.
