Yes and the law school was better for it.
Off the top of my head I can think of three prominent non LDS profs that were there then. Two of the three were among my favorites.
I do the the analogy fails a bit though because a head coach would be more like a college dean or higher.

Must have been before 1977, if ever, becasue it wasn't true then.

It was true in the law school in the 90s and I think into 2000.
